Fragrance Scent Notes Top Notes, Middle Notes, and Base Notes

A fragrance is described in a musical metaphor as having three sets of notes making a harmonious scent accord.

The notes unfold over the life span of a fragrance. The immediate impressions are the Top Notes leading to the deeper Middle Notes, and the Base Notes gradually appearing. These notes are created carefully with knowledge of the evaporation process of a fragrance which can very from individual to individual

Top notes: The scents that are perceived immediately on application of a fragrance. They form a person's initial impression of the fragrance, also called the head notes.

Middle notes: The scent of a fragrance that emerges just prior to the top notes dissipating and act to mask the often unpleasant initial impression of base notes, which become more pleasant with time, also known as the heart notes.

Base notes: The scent of a fragrance that appears close to the middle notes dissipating. The base and middle notes together are the main theme of a fragrance. Base notes bring depth and solidity to a fragrance. These scents are typically rich and deep and are usually not perceived for some time after the initial application.

The scents in the top and middle notes are influenced by the base notes as well the scents of the base notes will be altered by the type of fragrance materials used as middle notes.

This is why it is important that you try a fragrance on your own skin, and wear it for a day before you purchase an expensive bottle

If you are looking for a fragrance using the individual notes to determine its scent, you will want to look more at the base notes but, do not discount the Top and Middle Notes altogether.

If you are looking for why a fragrance doesn’t have the same scent on you as it does on others

Make sure you wait the proper amount of time for all the notes to mature, take into consideration where in the life span the fragrance was when you smelled it on the other individual, was it the initial impression or some amount of time afterwards when the middle notes were coming out or the base notes were coming into play?

How much fragrance are you applying? Try Appling more or less of the fragrance to see if it makes a difference. Check to see it you are using another product that may be interfering with the fragrance makeup, deodorant, lotion product, fabric softener etc…

Consider it may be a skin chemistry issue. We all have eyes but our vision varies from individual to individual, we all have skin but our skin chemistry varies from individual to individual.

Skin can be dry to oily, cool to warm, absorb different compounds at different rates, as well as excreting natural compounds in different amounts. Our skin to a small extent is also part of our body’s waist system and allows toxic compounds to leave the body.

Dry or warm skin can cause the solvent or certain fragrance notes to be absorbed or evaporate too quickly, sometimes applying a non fragrance lotion first may help. Oily or cool skin can cause the solvent or certain notes to linger longer than they should, try applying the fragrance just after bathing make sure a soap, shampoo, conditioner, or body wash may not be affecting the fragrance.

Skin absorption of chemical compounds, similar to how some medications are administered through the skin like a nicotine patch or localized pain relief patch, our skin will absorb some compounds and not others and this will very from individual to individual. Fragrance Scent notes are Aromatic compounds that come from sources all around the world that you may have never come into contact with until now, if it is a particular note you may be able to narrow it down to which note and either avoid that note in future fragrance choices or try it from a different designer.

Day to day exposure to chemical compounds at work or with a hobby may have some effect. These compounds can stick to our skin and may not be washed off to easily leaving residue, they may also be absorbed into the skin.

Changes in health or medications could affect your skin chemistry.

As stated before our skin to a small extent is also part of our body’s waist system and allows toxic compounds to leave the body, chemical compounds that may have been absorbed through the skin as well as medications applied to the skin or taken orally can leave the body in small amounts through the skin causing a possible chemical reaction with a fragrance’s aromatic note compounds.
